Karen was raised in Indian Trail, NC and has lived in Mooresville, NC for 16 years. Raised by William, a Marine, who was an accomplished long distance rifle competitor, her first introduction to firearms was at the young age of 6. Since firearms were an inevitable part of their family environment, her father stressed it was imperative for her to know the importance of firearm safety. So her education began quite early.
After working 18 years in the construction industry in Charlotte, NC, Karen's career came to an abrupt halt in 2009 when the local economy failed. She spent a few years at home raising her children and continuing her

education. During this time, Karen earned the designation of NRA Certified Instructor in the disciplines of FIRST Steps Pistol, Basic Pistol, Home Firearm Safety, Refuse To Be A Victim, and Eddie Eagle Gun Safe. She also gained certification through the North Carolina Department of Justice to instruct Laws Governing Concealed Handguns (NC Conceal Carry).
In 2012, with the support of her husband David, Karen opened the doors to Carolina Self Protection, LLC and began an incredibly rewarding career in firearms and personal safety education. In 2016 Karen expanded her training to become an NRA Certified Training Counselor and NRA CHIEF Range Safety Officer, which allows her to train and certify prospective NRA Instructors and Range Safety Officers.
